Description: Michael Rader was honored as mastersmith June 2010. Over the years, he has gained a reputation for creating some of the best chef's knives found anywhere. This, combined with his exquisite woodworking skills, truly sets him apart from other knifemakers. This 7-1/2 inch slicer was made back in the spring of 2007 when Rader was still a Journeyman Smith. It has been kept in a private collection since it was made and by all appearances Michael could have made it yesterday!
Like his hunting knives, this slicing knife was pre-tested for edge flex and cutting ability before assembly. From carving roasts and hams to cutting vegetables and fruits, a slicer's long slender blade is a great choice.
The blade was forged to shape from 52100 carbon steel. 52100 is considered by many knifemakers and users to be among the highest performing steels used in the knife industry. The small crystalline grain of this steel ensures a keen, long lasting edge. A hand rubbed satin finish lends an heirloom quality to Michael's work.
The bolster is integral -- a technique that, while common in production knives, is very rare in handmade knives due to the difficulty of implementation.
The handle is formed from oak burl with blackwood accents. The twisted oak burl has a beautiful mix of medium brown tones, which is well set against the jet black African blackwood. By using stabilized woods, Michael is able to combine the beauty of natural wood with durability.
The knife has perfect balance and feels exceptional in the hand. This is a knife you won't want to put down, and is sure to become a 'goto' knife in the kitchen.
