Description: Mastersmith Harvey Dean has been handcrafting knives since 1981 and began hand forging blades in 1986. As a member of the American Bladesmith Society, he received his Mastersmith rating in 1992. Dean strives to use the best quality materials in every knife he makes. He prefers to use natural materials for handles, such as hardwoods, antler, pearl, and ancient ivory.
This Sheffield Bowie is a beautiful knife inspired by a knife made in the middle of the 19th century by the W. Butcher Company in Sheffield, England. This recreation shows Harvey's incredible skill as a knifemaker. This knife was made for the 2007 Art Knife Invitational Show in San Diego, CA. It has been in a single private collection and has been meticulously cared for. By all appearances, it could have been made yesterday. In addition to the sheath, the knife is accompanied by the AKI catalog. This knife is featured on page 8 of the catalog.
The blade is hand forged from 1084 carbon steel and features a meticulous hand rubbed finish. A long swedge runs half way along the blade. "DEAN" is stamped on the left side of the ricasso and his M.S. mark is stamped on the right side.
The handle is made from ebony wood (Diospyros crassiflora) that has been hand checkered. This painstaking process is very time consuming and was considered the ultimate handle choice during the 19th century. The hidden tang handle is secured using 18k gold pins and features 18k gold escutcheons on both sides. The handle meets perfectly with a decorative ferrule and double dumbbell guard -- both formed from fine German silver. The knife is extremely light for its size and very comfortable in hand.
This Bowie is accompanied by a black leather sheath with nickel silver throat, frog, and tip.
Exceptional work throughout!
